چکیده

Genomic techniques allow new approaches to long-standing questions in evolutionary biology. In particular, the development of linkage maps will accelerate the identification of genes underlying adaptive traits. We discuss the application of these technologies to understanding the radiation of cichlid fishes in Lake Malawi, East Africa. We have developed a linkage map for Oreochromis niloticus and are using it to identify the genetic factors controlling adaptive differences in jaw morphology among closely related Malawi cichlids. Cloning of visual pigment genes is leading to a new understanding of the visual capabilities of these fishes. We argue that a combination of linkage mapping, transcriptome profiling and analysis of candidate genes is likely to be the most efficient approach to identifying the genetic basis of adaptive evolution.

Crater lake habitat predicts morphological diversity in adaptive radiations of cichlid fishes.

Adaptive radiations provide an excellent opportunity for studying the correlates and causes for the origin of biodiversity. In these radiations, species diversity may be influenced by either the ecological and physical environment, intrinsic lineage effects, or both. Disentangling the relative contributions of these factors in generating biodiversity remains a major challenge in understanding w...

Evolution of genomic structural variation and genomic architecture in the adaptive radiations of African cichlid fishes

African cichlid fishes are an ideal system for studying explosive rates of speciation and the origin of diversity in adaptive radiation. Within the last few million years, more than 2000 species have evolved in the Great Lakes of East Africa, the largest adaptive radiation in vertebrates. These young species show spectacular diversity in their coloration, morphology and behavior. However, littl...

The Integrated Genomic Architecture and Evolution of Dental Divergence in East African Cichlid Fishes (Haplochromis chilotes x H. nyererei)

The independent evolution of the two toothed jaws of cichlid fishes is thought to have promoted their unparalleled ecological divergence and species richness. However, dental divergence in cichlids could exhibit substantial genetic covariance and this could dictate how traits like tooth numbers evolve in different African Lakes and on their two jaws. To test this hypothesis, we used a hybrid ma...

The effect of Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) and Nettle root (Urtica dioica) on growth rate and sex reversal of convict cichlid (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum)

The aims of the present study were to investigate the effect of Gokshura and nettle root extracts on growth rate and sex reversal in Convict cichlid fish. Seven-day hatchlings were immersed in water containing 0 (Control, T1), 200 mg/l nettle root extract (T2), 300 mg/l nettle root extract (T3), 10 mg/l Gokshura extract (T4) and 10 mg/l Gokshura plus 200 mg/l nettle root extracts (T5) for two m...

Genomic architecture of ecologically divergent body shape in a pair of sympatric crater lake cichlid fishes.

Determining the genetic bases of adaptations and their roles in speciation is a prominent issue in evolutionary biology. Cichlid fish species flocks are a prime example of recent rapid radiations, often associated with adaptive phenotypic divergence from a common ancestor within a short period of time. In several radiations of freshwater fishes, divergence in ecomorphological traits - including...
